We in Uganda, are very excited about hosting the G77 Summit 2020, also referred to as the 3rd South Summit Uganda. It is the first time that the G77 summit is being held in Africa, and we couldn’t be prouder that Uganda was chosen as the host destination.<\/p>\n

G77 Summit 2020 Venue<\/strong><\/p>\n The G77 Summit venue is at the Speke Resort Munyonyo, 45 minutes away from the Kampala City Centre. <\/p>\n <\/p>\n When is the 3rd South Summit being held?<\/strong><\/p>\n The G77 Summit (3rd South Summit) will be held on 17th – 19th April 2020 in Kampala, Uganda.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n What is the theme for the G77 (3rd South Summit) this year?<\/strong><\/p>\n History:<\/strong><\/p>\n The Group of 77 (G-77) was established on 15 June 1964 by 77 developing countries – signatories of the \u201cJoint Declaration of the Seventy-Seven Developing Countries\u201d issued at the end of the first session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva.<\/p>\n Although the members of the G-77 have increased to 135 countries, the original name was retained due to its historic significance. As the largest coalition of developing countries in the United Nations, the Group of 77 is a way for the countries to promote their economic interests. <\/p>\n The South Summit is the supreme decision-making body of the Group of 77. The First and the second south summits were held in Havana, Cuba, on 10 \u2013 14 April 2000 and in Doha, Qatar, on 12 \u2013 16 June 2005, respectively. In accordance with the principle of geographical rotation, the Third South Summit will be held in Africa, in Kampala, Uganda, on 17 \u2013 19 April 2020. An interesting fact is that the third south summit was to be held in Libya in 2010, but the war that toppled it’s longest serving President, Col Muammar Gaddafi, meant the summit could not be held as planned.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Purpose:<\/strong><\/p>\n Ambassador Zakaria Fellah, the senior advisor for communication and outreach at the G77 secretariat in New York said their organisation brings together countries with large economies like India and China and those with emerging economies like many African Countries. <\/span><\/p>\n Fellah said that they are a powerful coalition with a purpose of channelling their power into one single message so that their agenda is not dismissed by others. He added that speaking as a group has compelled United Nations to take into serious account the developing countries’ agenda, which may not have been the case, were it to be left to individual countries. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhen we negotiate with the UN as a team, it gives us more leverage to impose our views on those nations which think that they can do without us. We want them to be our partners on equal terms,\u201d Fellah said.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Who will be attending?<\/strong><\/p>\n Many heads of state with their delegations and other participants from 135 countries will be flying to Kampala to attend this high-level meeting.
