What is Christmas?

Christmas is an annual festival celebrated on 25th December worldwide where families and friends gather to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Why do we celebrate Christmas?

Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ.

The word “Christmas” comes from The Mass of Christ (Jesus) where Christians gather to remember that Jesus Christ died for us and then came back to life.

Nowadays, Christians and even non-Christians gather with their families to celebrate this holiday and to appreciate what they have.

Giving Christmas Gifts on Christmas is also a big tradition and one of the fun reasons to celebrate Christmas. It is a gesture of appreciation for one another, showing you care and bonding with the family.

Why is Christmas celebrated on 25th December?

No one knows the real birthday of Jesus Christ! No date is given in the Bible. So why is 25th December chosen as the birth date of Jesus Christ?

Some people think that December 25th might have been chosen because the Winter Solstice and the ancient pagan Roman midwinter festivals called ‘Saturnalia’ and ‘Dies Natalis Solis Invicti’ took place in December around this date – so it was a time when people already celebrated things. The Winter Solstice is the day where there is the shortest time between the sun rising and the sun setting. To pagans, this meant that the winter was over and spring was coming and they had a festival to celebrate it and worshipped the sun for winning over the darkness of winter. Christian writers would connect this re-birth of the sun to the birth of the son, Jesus Christ.

A second explanation is that the date when Mary was told she would have a very special baby (The Annunciation) was on 25th March. Hence, it is assumed that Jesus Christ would then have been born on 25th December (9 months later).

Who celebrates Christmas?

Christmas is celebrated by all Christians around the world.

It is now also celebrated by non-Christians as a festival of love, family, appreciation, giving and kindness.

What is the Christmas Spirit?

Christmas is a time when everyone is feeling happy, joyful and in the spirit of giving. The Christmas Spirit is about:

Giving:

Buying Christmas gifts for your loved ones is a Christmas tradition. It shows that you care for them. Christmas is also about giving to the less fortunate such as the homeless.

Appreciating:

Christmas is about gathering with your loved ones, spending time together no matter how busy you are. It is a time to appreciate what you have, who you have and be grateful about all the things in life.

What is Christmas Eve?

Christmas Eve is the evening before Christmas. Christmas Eve is usually a full day or half day holiday. Christmas Eve is when gifts are exchanged and special meals may be prepared.

The big Christmas feast is on Christmas day (the next day).

Where was Christmas first celebrated?

Christmas was first celebrated in Rome when the Roman Emperor was Constantine. He recognised 25th December as the birth date of Jesus Christ and since then, around the world, Christmas is celebrated on 25th December.

Who is Santa Claus?

Santa Claus is thought to be a mystical figure who travels in his sleigh (which can fly and is pulled by reindeer) to deliver gifts to all the children on Christmas Eve. (Warning! Some children believe he is real)

Some say Santa Claus has his workshop in the North Pole, while others believe that it is in Lapland, where little elves make all the Christmas toys. It is thought that on Christmas Eve, he comes down the chimney and puts all the Christmas toys in the stockings hung up by the fireplace. If the children are good, Santa will know what’s on their wish list and drop those gifts in their stockings. Milk and Cookies are usually left out on the table for Santa Claus.

What are the origins of Santa Claus?

It is thought that Santa Claus (Original name Saint Nicholas), was born in Turkey around the 4th century AD.

His parents died when he was a young boy and was left with a large inheritance. He was a very kind and giving man who spent his life helping those in need and giving gifts to children.

Since then, it is thought that he is the protector of children.
