G77 Summit 2020 venue Uganda Kampala

We in Uganda, are very excited about hosting the G77 Summit 2020, also referred to as the 3rd South Summit Uganda. It is the first time that the G77 summit is being held in Africa, and we couldn’t be prouder that Uganda was chosen as the host destination.

G77 Summit 2020 Venue

The G77 Summit venue is at the Speke Resort Munyonyo, 45 minutes away from the Kampala City Centre.

When is the 3rd South Summit being held?

The G77 Summit (3rd South Summit) will be held on 17th – 19th April 2020 in Kampala, Uganda.

What is the theme for the G77 (3rd South Summit) this year?

The theme this year will be “Leaving No One Behind”.  the Third South Summit looks to bring a new dynamic to the cooperation among its 134 Member States of the Group of 77 in a more competitive world. The Summit aims at boosting South-South cooperation including in the areas of trade, investment, sustainable development, climate change, poverty eradication, and digital economy.

In Kampala, the 134 Member States will reiterate the message of solidarity, unity, and complementarity of the South and speak with a unified voice to achieve their common goals and objectives.

By hosting the Third South Summit, the Republic of Uganda, under the leadership of H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni inaugurates a new agenda for a prosperous, united and stronger South.

Who will be opening the G77 Summit?

His Excellency, the President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, will open this high level summit.

History:

The Group of 77 (G-77) was established on 15 June 1964 by 77 developing countries – signatories of the “Joint Declaration of the Seventy-Seven Developing Countries” issued at the end of the first session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva.

Although the members of the G-77 have increased to 135 countries, the original name was retained due to its historic significance. As the largest coalition of developing countries in the United Nations, the Group of 77 is a way for the countries to promote their economic interests.

The South Summit is the supreme decision-making body of the Group of 77. The First and the second south summits were held in Havana, Cuba, on 10 – 14 April 2000 and in Doha, Qatar, on 12 – 16 June 2005, respectively. In accordance with the principle of geographical rotation, the Third South Summit will be held in Africa, in Kampala, Uganda, on 17 – 19 April 2020. An interesting fact is that the third south summit was to be held in Libya in 2010, but the war that toppled it’s longest serving President, Col Muammar Gaddafi, meant the summit could not be held as planned.

Purpose:

Ambassador Zakaria Fellah, the senior advisor for communication and outreach at the G77 secretariat in New York said their organisation brings together countries with large economies like India and China and those with emerging economies like many African Countries.

Fellah said that they are a powerful coalition with a purpose of channelling their power into one single message so that their agenda is not dismissed by others. He added that speaking as a group has compelled United Nations to take into serious account the developing countries’ agenda, which may not have been the case, were it to be left to individual countries.

“When we negotiate with the UN as a team, it gives us more leverage to impose our views on those nations which think that they can do without us. We want them to be our partners on equal terms,” Fellah said.

Who will be attending?

Many heads of state with their delegations and other participants from 135 countries will be flying to Kampala to attend this high-level meeting. It is estimated that approximately 2000 delegates will be attending the summit and there may be over 4000 participants.

There will be approximately 50 exhibitors.

Where can I stay during the G77 Summit?

As the venue for the G77 Summit is Speke Resort Munyonyo, that would be the best place to stay. However, given the large number of delegates attending, do not be surprised to find that the rooms have already been booked out at inflated prices.

Your next best bet is to stay in Kampala, 45 minutes from the venue. Here are our two recommendations for our hotels based in the heart of the Kampala city at very affordable rates.

Will this event be affected by the Corona Virus?

We cannot be sure. To date, there has been no case of the Corona Virus in Uganda. It is worth noting that China is one of the G77 countries and a lot of delegates were supposed to attend this event.

After the lock-down in China due to the Corona Virus, it’s very possible that several chinese delegates will not be attending. It is not certain whether there will be a ban on any travellers coming from China for this summit or whether there will be heightened security/infectious disease unit measures at the airport.

Our advice, regardless of who is visiting, would be to take precautionary measures:

Wash your hands with soap and water regularly during the day

Stay away from anyone who exhibits cough/flu symptoms

Do not touch your face, eyes or mouth before washing your hands

Wear a surgical mask to avoid catching the virus

Wear gloves where possible and avoid shaking hands

Sight-seeing during your visit to Uganda for the G77 Summit

Why not book an entire week since you are visiting Uganda to discover what Uganda is about. Located on the Equator, Uganda boasts a variety of flora and fauna as well as wildlife.

Uganda’s mountain gorillas are world-renowned and are slowly growing in numbers now, but were on the brink of extinction. These mountain gorillas can only be found in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo.

Uganda’s national parks are home to the big 5, lions, elephants, buffalo, leopard and rhino. While on safari, you can also explore some of Uganda’s beautiful waterfalls such as Murchision falls.

This is also an opportunity for you to explore the culture of Kampala. Mingle with the people in Uganda and appreciate all the similarities and differences.

If you visiting from an European country, you probably will be delighted to find the temperature of Uganda is anywhere between 28-32 degrees Celsius all year round. Bask in the sun at the beach or even at our hotel, after taking a dip in the pool.
