Travel to Uganda once lockdown has opened 2021

Uganda (Kampala) has now opened from a full lockdown to a partial lockdown. Some restrictions are still in place.

Here’s a travel guide for you for the restrictions currently in Uganda.

There is a curfew from 7pm to 5:30am

– You can travel with a boda boda until 6pm. Both the rider and passenger must wear a mask

– Malls & Arcades are now open but with strict SOPs

– Funerals & Weddings restricted to 20 people

– Conferences, workshops and seminars remain banned except with explicit permission from the Ministry of Health and related MDAs

– Places of worship remain closed

– Outdoor sports continue but without spectators

– Indoor sports e.g gym, pool table remain shut (Our gym is open to guests only)

– Concerts, gaming, betting and bars remain shut. You can order drinks from our bar to your room

– Casinos, theatres and cinemas remain shut

– Restaurants remain open (There is a curfew at 7pm so most restaurants will serve food until about 5-6pm. Best to order dinner early or make alternative arrangements e.g you can buy groceries from Senana supermarket a few minutes walk from us)

Avoid restaurants serving alcohol – there has been unpleasant news of police visiting such restaurants. As bars are shut, there is some ambiguity as to whether restaurants can serve alcohol causing unfortunate exchanges with the police. I would advise you to order take away.

– Salons open

– Sauna & Steam bath / Spa remain shut

– Schools remain shut

– Private vehicles can now move across districts but with only 3 persons including the driver. Registered tourists’ vehicles can continue to move between districts and operate as normal with more than 3 passengers

– Entebbe International airport remains open

– Public transport opens to 50% capacity to be reviewed after 2 weeks

– Food markets remain open

Arrival and Departure at Entebbe International Airport in Uganda

If you are looking to travel to Uganda, see below for what you can expect at the airport. Ofcourse, nothing is set in stone and always expect the unexpected as it is Uganda 🙂

– On arrival, you’ll need to provide a negative COVID19 test certificate, issued no more than 72 hours before boarding the aircraft. You’ll be denied entry without this certificate if you’re a foreign national.

– Travellers from the UK, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Turkey, UAE and USA are required to undergo PCR testing at the airport at their own expense. Cost is upto $65.

– There is currently no statement regarding whether you could be exempt from the PCR test on arrival if you have had a full COVID-19 vaccination, though you could try your luck!

– You’ll be taken to a nearby testing site for the PCR test that could take upto 4 hours. If you test positive, you’ll be taken to a Ministry of Health designated COVID-19 isolation facility.

– Travellers who have been to India in the previous 14 days will not be permitted entry into Uganda unless you are a Ugandan returning home.

– Arriving passengers will be subject to temperature checks and screened for COVID19.

– Departing passengers are required to provide a negative COVID19 PCR test certificate, issued no more than 72 hours before travel. The 72 hours starts on the day the sample is collected for testing. We recommend “Test and Fly” for your COVID19 test and they can come to our hotel to take your test sample and provide your results the next working day.

– Departing passengers are advised to arrive at the airport atleast 4 hours before departure. You’ll be expected to wear a face mask at the airport.

– If you’re travelling on flights arriving or departing during curfew hours, you’ll be allowed to travel to and from the airport on presentation of a valid ticket. Remember to send your ticket to your driver who is picking you up.
